My husband came home from the grocery store tonight with a dozen flowers, wrapped in cellophane, for me. He apologized for not arranging to have a beautiful assortment of flowers delivered to our house, as he has done for many previous Valentine’s Days. Given that we’re trying to save money and pay off all the hospital bills from 2010, I was actually quite grateful for a $15 bunch of Publix roses. They’re pretty. They look lovely on the kitchen table. They didn’t jack up our credit card bill by $50. They’re for me! What’s not to love? Also, now I don’t have to feel at all guilty that his Valentine’s Day “present” is only two bags of Dove chocolates from the seasonal aisles at Target. I know. Romantics R Us.
Hope you have a happy Valentine’s Day, whether you’re one of those people who throws himself into the holiday and buys lavish amounts of chocolate and flowers for his loved one or one of those people who defiantly insists that Valentine’s Day is a holiday in name only and was manufactured by the greeting card industry to make money.
